Seafarers are people who are involved and responsible for carrying out the operational activities of a ship. In operating the ship, there are various types of roles that work hand in hand to ensure a smooth sailing process.
These roles generally fall under two different management departments. Namely the deck department and the machinery department. The profession of chief engineer or head of the engine room is one of the roles included in the ship management structure of the machinery department.
“The machinery department contains people who are involved in the operation and maintenance of ship engines. The department is led by a Chief Engineer,” said the captain of the LNG ship, Captain Wales Hendra Putra.
As for the podcast broadcast on the LightHouse Seafarer Network YouTube channel, one of the Chief Engineers of the LNG ship belonging to the Humpuss Intermoda Group explained the duties and responsibilities of a Chief Engineer.

“The Chief Engineer is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the engine condition of a ship is safe and feasible to operate,” said Rick Antonio, GTSI’s chief engineer in the podcast broadcast.
Not only telling about the duties and responsibilities of a Chief Engineer, Rick also shared a number of experiences in living the profession. The condition of the machine that sometimes experiences trouble or problems is certainly a distinct impression for a Chief Engineer.
“A Chief Engineer is required to be able to minimize delays in shipping activities. Or in terms called zero delay,” explained Rick.
It is a matter of pride for all crew members in the machinery department.
“When we solve a problem, it becomes a satisfaction and pride for a Chief Engineer. Because the ship did not experience delays,” added Rick.
