The Humpuss Intermoda Group Integrated Maritime Services segment, PT Humpuss Maritim Internasional (HUMI) has made maritime history in the country. HUMI has succeeded in producing the first female LNG ship engineer in Indonesia.
Angelina Sabila Janna, a cadet of the Jakarta High School of Shipping Science (STIP) who is now joining the LNG ship was recruited by PT MCS Internasional (MCSI), a subsidiary of HUMI.
Angelina revealed a series of reasons why she was interested in the world of shipping which is generally rarely interested by women. She never imagined that she would become the first female LNG ship engineer. She did not deny that she had learned many useful lessons and knowledge for the development of her future career.
“LNG carrier (LNG carrier ship) is a ship that has a very complex machining system and is connected to one another. Here I have the opportunity to be able to gain knowledge that is very useful for the future career path,” she explained.
On one occasion, Angelina did not hesitate to share the unique experience she got when she was sailing with other ship crews or engineers, which were mostly dominated by men.
“They (men) sometimes don’t have the heart to let me do heavy work in the engine room. Though I enjoy doing it. It also proves that I am capable of becoming a reliable ship engineer,” she added.
Angelina also shared the response of her parents regarding the field of work she currently holds.
“They are very proud and fully support whatever work I do, there is never an element of coercion in education, career or anything else. They give me any freedom as long as it’s good for me and it affects people,” she said.
Although not an easy job for most women, being an LNG ship engineer is a matter of pride for Angelina. The experience gained so far has made her believe that women have the same opportunities on board the ship.
“The effort I make to improve the quality is by focusing on learning and sharpening theory, practice and adapting quickly,” concluded Angelina.
The Corporate Secretary of HUMI said that Angelina’s presence in the LNG ship operational line was proof of the Company’s implementation of gender equality.
“The presence of women’s roles in the operation of LNG ships is clear evidence of the application of the principle of gender equality as a representation of good corporate governance,” said the Corporate Secretary of HUMI.
