PT Humpuss Maritim Internasional Tbk (HUMI) is setting its sights on becoming an ESG Leader in the shipping industry by 2029, a goal it plans to achieve through its newly developed ESG Roadmap 2025-2029. This roadmap, crafted by the ESG Task Force, underwent extensive consultation with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with their expectations.
“We conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with HUMI’s ESG Task Force, involving 27 participants from relevant business units across the HUMI Group on November 5-6, 2024. We also distributed questionnaires to 113 internal and external stakeholders to evaluate crucial ESG topics for HUMI’s sustainability,” stated Tirta Hidayat, President Director of HUMI.
Through this rigorous process, HUMI identified nine material ESG topics on November 25, 2024. These include: Emission and Energy Management, Ecological Impacts, Compliance to Law and Regulations, Maritime Safety and Operational Risk Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Maritime Cyber Security Management, Sustainable Human Capital Management, Business Ethics & Integrity, and Waste Management.
Focus on Human Capital and Unique Value Proposition
On the social front, HUMI emphasizes the importance of developing competent and integral human resources, alongside fostering an inclusive organizational culture. “Human resources are a critical asset in realizing sustainable business operations. HUMI views people as the resource that can help the company achieve all mutually agreed targets,” Tirta explained.
To this end, HUMI has formulated innovative and adaptive human resource development programs. This initiative is expected to improve internal performance processes, impacting financial and non-financial achievements, as well as stakeholder satisfaction.
HUMI is also committed to making ESG competency a unique value proposition. “By integrating ESG into every aspect of its operations, HUMI prioritizes long-term solutions for the environment, communities, and all stakeholders,” Tirta clarified. Strategic steps include reducing carbon footprint, sustainable waste management, creating an inclusive work environment, implementing supply chain sustainability standards, social programs, and transparent and accountable governance.
Addressing Challenges and Leveraging Digitalization
Tirta acknowledged the challenges in ESG implementation, such as significant initial investments, regulatory complexity, cultural transformation, and supply chain readiness. However, HUMI has prepared a strategy to build organizational resilience through an integrated ESG Roadmap, partnerships and technological innovation, strengthening human resource capacity, and proactive risk management.
Meanwhile, HUMI Director Dedi Hudayana outlined several criteria and indicators for achieving the 2029 ESG Leader target, referencing global standards and the nine material topics identified. “With this roadmap, HUMI is committed to solidifying its position as an innovative and competitive sustainable shipping company both domestically and internationally,” he said.
The mangrove conservation program, initiated in mid-2024, will also be continuously developed. The plan is to integrate it with carbon trading mechanisms and collaborate with coastal communities through education and economic empowerment.
Digitalization will also be optimized to accelerate the implementation of HUMI’s ESG Roadmap. Prepared initiatives include a Fleet Performance Monitoring System, Employee Well-being Dashboard, ESG Data Analytics & Reporting, and Cybersecurity & Digital Risk Management.
“The utilization of digital technology enables real-time ESG monitoring, improved efficiency and emission reduction, better employee and crew safety and well-being, as well as higher ESG transparency and compliance,” explained Dedi.
By implementing digitalization, Dedi stated that ESG monitoring becomes more accurate and real-time, while also enhancing efficiency, which contributes to carbon emission reduction. Furthermore, better employee and crew safety and well-being can be achieved through greater transparency and ESG compliance.
“By optimizing technology, HUMI ensures that the ESG Roadmap is not just a vision, but a measurable reality with real impact,” he concluded.
