JAKARTA – As part of the proactive initiative by PT Humpuss Maritim Internasional Tbk. (HUMI) to kick off the year 2024, the company designed and conducted In-House Training (IHT#1) specifically for Middle Management Leaders on January 18, 2024, in Jakarta. The training aimed to equip the leaders with in-depth knowledge of ESG aspects and how to integrate them into every operational aspect of the company, thereby improving its ESG performance, reinforcing sustainability commitments, and adhering to scientific guidelines for environmental restoration and regeneration in Indonesia.
Two inspirational speakers at IHT#1 were Mr. Jalal, Board Advisory – Social Investment Indonesia (SSI), who provided profound insights into ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) concepts and related issues, Sustainability, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in the context of the maritime transportation industry. Additionally, Ms. Lany Harijanti, ASEAN Regional Program Manager – Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), discussed the impact and implementation of ESG concepts and sustainability in the maritime transportation industry (energy: gas, oil, petrochemical) with a focus on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting standards.
In addition to conveying theoretical knowledge, concrete examples of ESG implementation in the maritime transportation industry were provided. Participants gained an understanding of how environmental, social, and corporate governance aspects can be effectively applied to improve company performance while positively impacting society and the surrounding environment.
“‘We believe that the long-term success of the company depends on our ability as the company’s asset to adapt to environmental changes and understand its social responsibility,”‘ expressed Okty Saptarini, Corporate Secretary of HUMI. “‘Through this In-House Training, we aim to create awareness and deep understanding among leaders who play a key role in integrating ESG principles into daily operations,”‘ Okty added.
“‘The concrete steps taken by HUMI not only include training aspects like today but also involve establishing ESG policies, investing in environmentally friendly technology, such as the installation of a ballast water management system on ships added at the beginning of 2024, and increasing transparency through regular ESG performance reporting. Management is committed to creating positive change and contributing to sustainable development in Indonesia,”‘ stated Mr. Tirta Hidayat, CEO of HUMI, at the opening of IHT#1.
With the organization of IHT#1 as the initial step, HUMI has laid a strong foundation to ensure that ESG aspects are ingrained in the company’s DNA. Thus, it is expected that sustainability and improved ESG performance will become the main pillars in facing future challenges in the maritime transportation industry in Indonesia.
How to Manage Your People
On the second day, IHT#2 discussed Leadership development at HUMI, with Mr. Pungki Purnadi providing specific guidance to HUMI leaders at IHT#2 on January 19, 2024. Leaders were equipped with skills to lead teams from inception to completion, including recruitment, development, and recognition processes.
“‘One of the main focuses of this training is the importance of a leader’s role from the beginning, namely in the recruitment process. The crucial selection of individuals aligned with the company’s values and having the potential for growth,”‘ said Okty Saptarini, Corporate Secretary of HUMI, who is also responsible for employee development.
“‘Leaders are facilitators for the growth of their respective team members,”‘ added Okty. Therefore, every leader should have insights into coaching, mentoring, and employee development programs.
“‘A strong leader is responsible for developing the potential in each team member. They are not just managers but Human Capital for their team members, motivating and assisting each team member in reaching their peak performance,”‘ said Mr. Pungki Purnadi.
“‘Incentives are not only always financial incentives, but also about sincere recognition and appreciation for each team member’s contribution,”‘ he added.
With IHT#2, HUMI is determined to shape leaders who not only possess managerial abilities but also can lead their teams to higher performance levels and sustainable growth at HUMI in the future.
